What is a SIM Free handset

On initial thoughts a SIM Free handset may appear to be a mobile phone handset which does not require a SIM card.

However this is not the case.

So why would a handset be sold, or bought, which does not contain a SIM Card?

Essentially, a "SIM Free" handset is the same as an Unlocked handset - a SIM Free handset is not locked to a specific network, allowing you to use a SIM Card of a network of your choosing.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a SIM Free handset?

One advantage is that your handset is probably unlocked - you are free to use a SIM card from whichever network you choose. But if this is important to you it might be prudent to confirm that your intended mobile phone is also in fact unlocked.

The greatest disadvantage however is that typically you will pay much more for your handset than if your handset is tied (locked) to a specific network.
